Dragoon Septet
The Dragoon Band’s horn septet represents the Finnish septet tradition at its most authentic. Developed in the 1880s, the Finnish horn septet includes an Eb cornet, two B cornets, an Eb alto horn, a B tenor horn, a B baritone horn and an Eb tuba. The Dragoon Septet uses these exact instruments to create the original septet’s warm and unique tone.
The Dragoon Septet’s repertoire is quite broad. Among other pieces, opera overtures were arranged for the ensemble to enrich the musical offering starting from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. That period was the golden era of horn septets, during which the most prominent Finnish composers – among them Jean Sibelius and Leevi Madetoja – also wrote pieces for the ensemble. In addition to traditional septet music, the Dragoon Septet plays pieces composed or arranged by contemporary composers.
